Gain
In audio, the ratio of output level to the corresponding input level for a device. Level is typically represented in terms of power or voltage, but gain is unitless and is identical whether voltages or powers were used to calculate it. Because gain is a ratio, it is usually described using decibels. A gain of 0 dB indicates no change in level, while a gain of 10 dB is perceived as approximately a doubling in loudness—depending on the nature of the sound and on the initial loudness.
