Aviation Supplies & Academics, Inc. (ASA) develops and markets aviation supplies, software, and books for pilots, flight instructors, flight engineers, airline professionals, air traffic controllers, flight attendants, aviation technicians and enthusiasts. Established in 1947, ASA also provides ...
The DC resistance of an electrical insulating material. Resistance specifications normally list the amount of leakage current allowed for a given applied voltage.
Industry:Aviation
The DC voltage placed on the grid of an electron tube which sets the operating point about which an AC input signal is applied. The proper bias voltage allows the tube to amplify the signal applied to its grid without distortion.
Industry:Aviation
The decimal equivalent of a fraction in which the denominator does not go into the numerator an even number of times. The fraction 1/3 gives a repeating decimal: 0.3333333….
“Report” (air traffic control). A term used by ATC to instruct pilots to advise ATC of specific information, such as “Report passing Hamilton VOR.”
Industry:Aviation
The decision height or minimum descent altitude above the highest runway elevation in the touchdown zone (first 3,000 feet of the runway). HAT is published on instrument approach charts in conjunction with all straight-in minimums.
Industry:Aviation
The decrease in electrical pressure caused by electrons flowing through a resistance. The amount of IR drop, expressed in volts, is found by multiplying the current (I), in amps, by the resistance (R), in ohms.
Industry:Aviation
The decrease in the amount of braking action that occurs with some types of brakes that are applied for a long period of time. True fading occurs with overheated drum-type brakes. As the drum is heated, it expands in a bell-mouthed fashion. This decreases the amount of drum in contact with the brake shoes and decreases the braking action.
A condition similar to brake fading occurs when there is an internal leak in the brake master cylinder. The brakes are applied, but as the pedal is held down, fluid leaks past the piston, and the brakes slowly release.
Industry:Aviation
The decreasing amplitude of pointer oscillation of an electrical meter, caused by the generation of a voltage in the moving coil as it oscillates back and forth in the field of a permanent magnet. Energy used to produce current in the moving coil decreases the energy causing the oscillations.
Industry:Aviation
The defect in wood which causes it to have a high specific gravity and the appearance of an excessive growth of summerwood. In most species, there is little difference between the color of the springwood and summerwood. Any material containing compression wood is unsuited for aircraft structural use and must be rejected.
Industry:Aviation
The deposit of an extremely thin coating of metal on a surface. A flash coating is only thick enough to give color to the surface.
