Industry:Aviation
Procedures at selected airports to hold aircraft at the gate or other ground locations whenever departure delays exceed or are anticipated to exceed five minutes.
Industry:Aviation
Procedures used to minimize engine running time for aircraft destined for an airport experiencing prolonged arrival delays.
Industry:Aviation
Projections from the cylinder of a retractable landing gear strut about which the strut pivots to retract.
Industry:Aviation
Propellers of a multiengine airplane mounted on concentric propeller shafts. The engines are mounted side-by-side and drive the propeller shafts through gears. Coaxial propellers, turning in opposite directions, allow the torque produced by one propeller to counteract the torque caused by the other.
Industry:Aviation
Propellers on wing-mounted engines that turn in opposite directions. When flying at a high angle of attack, the descending propeller blade has a higher angle of attack than the ascending blade and the half of the propeller disk with the descending blade produces more thrust than the half with the ascending blade. On an airplane equipped with counter-rotating propellers the descending blades on both engines are near the aircraft centerline and neither engine is a critical engine.
Industry:Aviation
Provision in an electrical circuit to prevent the flow of an excessive amount of current. Circuit breakers, fuses, and current limiters open the circuit when excessive current flows.
Industry:Aviation
Pulverized wool or cotton fibers mixed with an adhesive. Flock can be sprayed on metal to produce a velvet-like protective finish. It can also be bonded to wire screen and used as a filtering element for certain types of air filters.
Industry:Aviation
Pure gold that has been rolled or beaten into extremely thin sheets. Gold leaf is usually about one microinch (1 x 10-6 inch) thick. Gold foil is similar to gold leaf, but is thicker.
Industry:Aviation
Pure water or a mixture of water and alcohol is sprayed into the compressor inlet or the diffuser inlet. When the water evaporates, it absorbs heat from the air and drops its temperature making the air more dense. Increasing the density of the air flowing through the engine increases the mass airflow, and this increases the thrust the engine produces.
