Energy possessed by an object because of its position, configuration, or the chemical arrangement of its constituents.
Industry:Aviation
Energy released when neutrons are knocked out of the nuclei of certain materials. Neutrons bind the protons together in the nucleus of an atom, and when neutrons are knocked out, the protons are then able to leave the nucleus. As they leave, they release great amounts of energy in the form of heat and light.
Industry:Aviation
Energy stored by an electric stress in the dielectric of a capacitor when two opposing electrical charges act across the dielectric. When a battery is connected across the two plates of a capacitor, electrons are pulled from one plate and forced into the other. When all the electrons that can be moved by the battery have been moved, the capacitor is charged and no more current flows. The battery can be disconnected, but electron pressure still remains between the plates. This voltage across the dielectric (the voltage on the plates) is caused by electrostatic energy.
Industry:Aviation
Energy that exists in a chemical element or in a chemical compound. This energy may be released when the element or compound joins (reacts with) other chemicals to produce new compounds. For example, when gasoline (C8H18) burns, it reacts with oxygen (O2) in the air and forms carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O). It also releases a large amount of energy in the form of light and heat.
Industry:Aviation
Energy transmitted in the form of waves of electromagnetic radiation. Light, heat, and radio-frequency electrical energy are forms of radiant energy.
Industry:Aviation
Entry into something. Runway incursion occurs when an aircraft taxies onto a runway.
Industry:Aviation
Equipment approved for installation in an aircraft, but not required to be installed. Several types of communications and navigation radio equipment and different types of instruments are included in the optional equipment list.
Industry:Aviation
Equipment required by the FAA to be installed in an aircraft for it to be considered airworthy. All FAA-certificated aircraft must carry an up-to-date equipment list, itemizing all of the required equipment.
Industry:Aviation
Equipment that uses both hydraulic and pneumatic forces. Certain types of control systems use pneumatic inputs to operate hydraulic valves. A pneumatic input requires very little power, and it can control a hydraulic output that produces a great deal of force.
Industry:Aviation
Ethyl, or grain, alcohol that has been treated with some type of additive to make it unfit for humans to drink.
