An electronic detection system used for locating objects in water. Pulses of acoustic energy (energy whose frequency is within the range that can be heard by the human ear) is transmitted through the water. This energy travels until it strikes an object, and part of it is reflected back to the sonar receiver where it is amplified and displayed on a scope or dial. Sonar is used by the Navy to detect the presence of submarines and by commercial fishermen to locate schools of fish. Passive sonar does not transmit pulses of energy, but listens for sounds made by the propellers of ships and submarines.

An electronic device that transmits information by means of electromagnetic waves. The transmitter consists of an oscillator, a modulator, and an amplifier. The oscillator produces a carrier wave of the proper radio frequency. The modulator impresses the information to be transmitted onto the carrier, and the modulated carrier wave is amplified and delivered to an antenna from which it radiates into space.

An electronic device which uses a thin wafer of semiconductor material to measure the intensity of a magnetic field. Control current flowing through the generator produces a Hall-effect voltage whose direction is perpendicular to the current, and whose intensity is proportional to both the control current and the strength of a magnetic field. The direction of the magnetic field passing through the generator is perpendicular to both the current and the voltage.

An electronic device which, by measuring the time interval between transmission and reception of radio pulses and correlating the angular orientation of the radiated antenna beam or beams in azimuth and/or elevation, provides information on range, azimuth, and/or elevation of objects in the path of the transmitted pulses. Radar, an acronym for RAdio Detecting And Ranging, was developed as a military system during World War II. A pulse of high-frequency electrical energy is transmitted from a highly directional antenna. The pulse travels until it strikes an object, then bounces back and is received by the antenna. The return pulse causes a bright spot to appear on the screen of a cathode-ray tube. Radar is used for detecting precipitation, for navigation, and for detecting obstructions to flight. Simplified radar is used for measuring the speed of vehicles on our highways.
