A whirling motion in a fluid. The coriolis force caused by the rotation of the earth causes water to flow out of a drain in a vortex. Air that spills over the wing tips of an airplane spins in the form of vortices. A tornado is an extremely strong vortex of air.

A white cotton flag mounted in line with a wooden pole and attached at both ends. Colored transfer marks are made on the blade tips, and the tracking flag is carefully moved against the tips of the blades as the helicopter is held near a hover.
