Company Profile:
Aviation Supplies & Academics, Inc. (ASA) develops and markets aviation supplies, software, and books for pilots, flight instructors, flight engineers, airline professionals, air traffic controllers, flight attendants, aviation technicians and enthusiasts. Established in 1947, ASA also provides ...
A type of electrical control transformer in which a small amount of current flowing in the control winding determines the amount of load current allowed to flow in the load winding. Direct current flowing through the bias and control windings of the magamp varies the magnetic saturation of the core, and the condition of saturation determines the permeability of the core. Varying the permeability of the core varies the amount of inductive reactance opposing the AC flowing in the load winding. Magnetic amplifiers are also called magamps and saturable reactors.
Industry:Aviation
A type of electrical filter used to smooth the pulsations in the output of an electronic power supply. A capacitor is installed in parallel with the rectifier output, and an inductor is in series.
Industry:Aviation
A type of electrical fuse holder that shows when a fuse has blown and opened the circuit. A small neon bulb is installed in the fuse holder, in parallel with the fuse. The resistance of a good fuse is so low that when current flows through it, there is not enough voltage drop across it to illuminate the bulb. But if the fuse blows and opens the circuit, the entire system voltage is dropped across the neon bulb, and it illuminates. The bulb does not allow enough current to flow to damage the circuit.
Industry:Aviation
A type of electrical insulating tape that was commonly used in the past, but is being replaced by more effective types of tape. Friction tape is a cloth tape impregnated with a black, sticky, tar-like material.
Industry:Aviation
A type of electrical machine used to change low-voltage direct current from a storage battery into high-voltage DC for operating some types of communications equipment. A genemotor has two armatures on a single shaft. One armature and one set of field coils are for the DC motor. The other armature and set of field coils are for the high-voltage generator. Genemotors are also called dynamotors.
Industry:Aviation
A type of electrical resistor made by depositing an extremely thin film of metal on a ceramic form. The thickness and type of metal film determines the resistance and the power-dissipating ability of the resistor.
Industry:Aviation
A type of electrical standard cell which produces an accurate reference voltage for use when making precision electrical measurements. The voltage produced by a cadmium cell at 20°C is 1.0186 volts.
Industry:Aviation
A type of electrical switch actuated by a push button. The button must be pushed each time the switch is to be opened or closed.
Industry:Aviation
A type of electrical switch having a movable blade (the knife) for one of the terminals and two contacts that are spring-loaded together for the other terminal. When the blade is between the contacts, the switch is closed, and current flows in the circuit. When the blade is lifted from the contacts, the switch is open, and no current flows. Knife switches are seldom used in aircraft electrical circuits.
Industry:Aviation
A type of electrical switch having four terminals. It can select either of two conditions in two separate circuits.
