A structure built in standard units, or modules.
Industry:Aviation
A structure built of noncombustible materials and designed so it cannot be destroyed by fire.
Industry:Aviation
A structure that is able to resist fire or exposure to high temperature for a specified period of time without being destroyed or structurally damaged.
Industry:Aviation
A substance added to a catalyzed resin to shorten the time needed for the resin to cure.
Industry:Aviation
A substance used to change the speed or rate of a chemical action without being chemically changed itself. Water functions as a catalyst in the process of iron turning into rust (iron oxide). Dry iron does not rust nearly as fast as iron with water on its surface. The water itself is not affected, but the iron unites with oxygen from the air to become iron oxide, or rust.
Industry:Aviation
A subsystem in a carburetor or fuel injection system used on a reciprocating engine. This system enriches the fuel-air mixture when the engine is operating at full power. The mixture ratio used for cruise power is adjusted to give the most economical operation, but when the engine develops full power, enough heat is released to cause damage. The power enrichment system meters additional fuel when the throttle is wide open. This fuel absorbs the excess heat. A power-enrichment system is also called an economizer system.
Industry:Aviation
A subsystem in a turbine engine fuel control that regulates the fuel scheduling as a function of altitude changes.
Industry:Aviation
A subsystem in an aircraft disk brake that compensates for disk or lining wear. Each time the brakes are applied, the automatic adjuster is reset for zero clearance, and when the brakes are released, the clearance between the disks or the disk and lining is returned to a preset value.
Industry:Aviation
A sudden change in voltage in an electrical circuit, lasting only a short period of time. A pulse can be either an increase or decrease in the voltage, and can be used as a bit of information transmitted in the circuit.
Industry:Aviation
A sudden increase in wind speed by at least 15 knots to a peak of 20 knots or more, and lasting for at least one minute. The essential difference between a gust, lasting less than one minute, and a squall is the duration of the peak speed.
